A BRITISH YEOMANRY CAVALRY PRIZE SABRE,
last quarter of the 18th century, with blue & gilt strongly curved 32in. blade (stained and faded), the back edge signed ''J.J. RUNKEL, SOLINGEN'' in script, the broadly fullered blade sides engraved with gilt-washed martial and musical trophies, the right side with a Royal Crest, the left with a ''G.R.'' monogram, gilded brass ''P'' shaped hilt, the cross-guard with turned down quillion and ''D'' shaped langets, the right inscribed ''THE REWARD OF PATRIOTISM, LOYALTY & SPIRIT'' within a border engraved panel, the left just border engraved, gilt back-strap, the pommel moulded in the form of a lion''s head and wire-bound sharkskin grip (hilt knucklebow and crossguard loose and deformed, some loss to gilding); TOGETHER WITH its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts (worn throughout and shrunk), the throat mount with frog-button and inscribed within an oval border on the reverse side ''R.
