The Meeting of Oberon and Titania
signed (lower right) and dated "05"
watercolor and ink on paper (mounted on archival paper), matted and framed
8 1/2 x 13 3/8 in. (216 x 344 mm), sheet size

A SUPERB WATERCOLOR. As noted by Christopher Wood in Fairies in Victorian Art (London, 2000), this "magnificent watercolour.... was one of the illustrations intended for Rackham's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', but was not in the end used" (p.167, illustrated, also illustrated on front endpapers). Wood notes that his version of Shakespeare's classic play, along with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, constiture "key fairy sources... In his life and work, Rakham virtually encapsulates the whole of Victorian fairy painting" (ibid, p.171).
