RARE AMMONITE PYRITE NODULE
Jurassic, Toarcian stage
Whitby, North Yorkshire, England
This lovely specimen is from a locality that yields barely two specimens per year and they are becoming increasingly scarce on the market. It looks like a shining metallic cannonball, the outer surface of the pyrite nodule polished to a silvery gun-metal sheen. But the real interest lies inside, split open to reveal the beautifully preserved remains of a Jurassic ammonite in both positive and negative, its dark coloring harmonizing beautifully with the dark slate gray stone. Measuring 2 5/8 inches wide, it is accompanied by two smaller specimens and each half of the nodule measures 6 1/8 inches wide.
