Sparks, MD, USALive Auction
Description: Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration, the Date "1796," and the Initials "E. F.," possibly Cheesequake, NJ, finely-potted, straight-sided jug with wide spout and ribbed strap handle, embellished with several groups of incised lines encircling the jug's body and spout. Decorated on the jug's front with a slip-trailed cobalt floral motif, along with additional cobalt applied to the rim, base of neck, and handle terminals. The cobalt date "1796" on the jug's right side, and the initials "E. F." in cobalt on the opposite side. Outstanding form, size, and cobalt decoration. For some similarly-themed floral designs and use of dates, see Goldberg, Warwick, and Warwick, "The Eighteenth-Century New Jersey Stoneware Potteries of Captain James Morgan and the Kemple Family," Ceramics in American, 2008. Excellent condition with a faint line at base, which probably occurred in the making, and a horizontal line in the handle, which does not continue completely through. H 6 7/8".
