A RARE GILT BRONZE AND CLOISONNE ENAMEL WATER POT, CHINA, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD (1735-1796)

The Complete collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, 43, Metal-bodied Enamel Wares, p. 114, no. 110.

The shape of this flask is extremely rare, the very small feet indicates that it should have been displayed on an oval tray. The way it is decorated is also very unusual and can be compared to a unique lidded vase sold at Christie''s London, 14 May 2013, Lot 147. Both pieces, the Christie''s vase and the present one, are rare and no other similar pieces appear to have been published. They have similarities in the design and the different registers of the decoration with different backgrounds in white, cobalt blue, or carmine red. The colours used for both vases together with the alternation of the backgrounds, the small flowers patterns, scrolls or lotus are similar, as well as the combination of green, red and yellow for the friezes.
Some high quality cloisonné, with the Qianlong mark, have the same combinations of horizontal registers with different colour backgrounds (like the cobalt blue colour) such as the imperial kundika from the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, 43, Metal-bodied Enamel Wares, op. cit., p. 114, no. 110.
This kundika has also similar bands of small lotus flowers, scrolls, flowers or petals. The combination of three background colours as on our vase and the Christie''s one is very rarely used. The white and dark colours, the use of small flower pattern, the shape of the lotus and the gilt bronze chilong on the shoulder are inspired by 16th and 17th century cloisonné; see for example the 16th century vase in the Palace Museum, illustrated in op. Cit., P. 37, no. 36 (for the gilt bronze applications on the shoulder and colors) ; or the box (op. cit., no. 32 and no. 24) for style of the lotus flowers.
