Description: REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Fourth Oriental Head.

Etching, circa 1635. 141x125 mm; 5 5/8x5 inches. Biörklund's second state (of 3); Usticke's first state (of 3); White and Boon's second state (of 3). The three balls of a foolscap watermark. The blank sides to the left, right and above the portrait expertly restored. A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching, with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear.

This is one of four portraits, from a loose series of "oriental heads," Rembrandt freely interpreted from earlier etchings by his friend and fellow artist Jan Lievens (1607-1674).

We have found only 16 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Bartsch 289; Biörklund 35-5; Hollstein (White and Boon) 289.
