medieval Rings with simple monograms, like this one, instead of signets, interlaced initials, or merchants marks, are relatively rare. They would not have been used for sealing but merely as signs of identification and status for the wearer. An oval disc-shaped bezel is engraved with the initials MR, and a round flat hoop joins the bezel at the shoulders.
