Description: Reverend Russell Gillespie (American/North Carolina, b. 1922), "Mountain Cabin Scene", carved wood, h. 22 1/2 in., w. 24 1/2 in., d. 22 1/2 in Provenance: Knoke Galleries, Atlanta, GA, 1998. Ill.: Manley, Roger, Signs and Wonders: Outsider Art Inside North Carolina, North Carolina Museum of Art. Note: Born in a log cabin in rural North Carolina, Russell Gillespsie sculpted from the roots and knots of trees and carved birds and animals from gourds. In this engaging sculpture, a man descends the stairs of his cabin with a bucket in hand to be filled by the dipper hanging next to the imaginary stream. Surrounding the cabin are a bird in a tree, several deer and small animals.
