Lot 3300: Revolutionary Slogan Art Cuba UNIQUE FRAMED CUBAN POSTER OF ERNESTO CHE GUEVARA Fidel Castro Iconography
Auction House: National Book Auctions
Auction Location: USA
Auction Date: 2009
Description: This lot contains the framed original Cuban poster of iconic revolutionary leader Ernesto Che Guevara shown in the corresponding image. Ernesto "Che" Guevara (June 14, 1928 - October 9, 1967) commonly known as Che Guevara, El Che, or simply Che, was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, military theorist, and major figure of the Cuban Revolution. Since his death, his stylized visage has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol and global insignia within popular culture.
This well-preserved and matted, brightly-colored original poster with protective glass is a one-of-a-kind piece, of which no other examples are known to exist. This posthumously printed work shows an upward-looking Che Guevara, portrayed in bright colors as the embodiment of an optimistic young revolutionary, under the revolutionary slogan "Hasta la Victoria Siempre" in black and red letters at the top of the poster. A long quotation by Fidel Castro appears immediately underneath the image. The message reads: "Podra morir el artista, sobre todo cuando se es artista de un arte tan peligroso como es la lucha revolucionaria, pero lo que no morira de ninguna forma es el arte al que consagra su inteligencia." ("The artist may die, particularly when one is an artist of an art as dangerous as the revolutionary struggle, but what absolutely cannot die is the art to which he dedicates his intelligence.") The numbers 1204 appear in red at the top right corner. A number 5 in white is visible at the bottom corner of the same side. This lot is accompanied by provenance to establish authenticity, in the form of copies of a letter signed by Manresa's son and and the original export certificate issued by the Cuban government. This frame, professionally done with acid-free and archival materials, measures 28" x 36 1/2".
