Abel the Shepherd resting in a landscape with his flock, pen and brown ink, on wove paper without watermark, bears [?]later monogram of Sir William Blake Richmond and dated 1858 on the trunk of the tree, 145 x 185 mm. (5 3/4 x 7 1/4 in), several erroneous attributions and inscriptions verso, light spotting and surface dirt, unframed, [mid-19th century] Provenance: Private Collection, UK ⁂ For a loosely associated work by Richmond, albeit in a reproductive medium, see the line engraving 'The Shepherd' (held in Tate, ref.: N04064), which shows noticeable similarities in the execution of line and cross-hatching, as well as the influences of The Ancients, Samuel Palmer, and William Blake.
