Ription Giovanni Paolo Panini (Piacenza 1691 - Rome 1765) Capriccio with a view of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, oil on canvas, 98 x 136 cm, framed, (Wo) The depiction of the Colosseum preoccupied Panini throughout his career as a veduta painter. Most of his compositions, including the present work, are ideal views of various important Roman monuments. The present composition has a pendant in the collection of the Duke of Sutherland, which is signed and dated 1741; according to Arisi, the present work was executed shortly afterwards. Literature: F.
