Notes: Cette oeuvre est une étude pour le tableau L'Equipe de Cardiff (Fig. 2), qui a été présenté au Salon des Indépendants en 1913. C'est une photographie de footballers que Delaunay avait trouvée dans le journal La Vie au grand air qui lui a inspiré cette composition. L'artiste a dessiné en arrière plan de la photographie à la fois la Tour Eiffel et la Grande Roue de Paris qui allaient figurer dans l'oeuvre définitive. La relative nouveauté du sujet correspondait bien à l'idéal de l'artiste qui était de capturer l'essence même de la modernité.Il est possible que Delaunay ait voulu défier la fascination des Futuristes pour le mouvement et les scènes urbaines et qu'il ait eu l'occasion d'examiner les tableaux très animés de joueurs de rugby de Boccioni. Delaunay a lui-même commenté le tableau final de la façon suivante : "les éléments modernes, l'affiche, la grande roue tout comme la tour font partie du jeu des footballers, des corps qui s'entrelacent dans la vie. Leur espace relatif, leur mouvement s'intègrent au mouvement général du tableau" (Virginia Spate, Orphism: the Evolution of non-figurative Painting in Paris, 1910-1914, New York, 1979, p. 205).

The present work is a study for the painting L'Equipe de Cardiff (Fig. 2), which was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913. Inspiration for the composition came from a photograph of footballers Delaunay took from the newspaper La Vie au grand air (Fig. 1). In the background of this photograph he drew in the Eiffel Tower and the Big Wheel of Paris, already establishing the idea for the final work. The relatively new subject of football (rugby) lent itself well to the artist's ideals of capturing the essence of modern day life. Delaunay may also have been challenging the Futurist fascination with rapid movement and urban settings, and may have seen Boccioni's lively paintings of rugby players. Delaunay himself commented on his final painting of this subject: 'The modern elements, the poster, the great wheel, the tower, take part in the game of the footballers, of the bodies which weave together in life. Their relative spaces, their movement, are a part of the general movement of the painting" (Virginia Spate, Orphism: the Evolution of non-figurative Painting in Paris, 1910-1914, New York, 1979, p. 205).
