McDonough Museum of Art, Inaugural Exhibition, Oct. 1991-May 1992, p. 27RELATED LITERATURER. Henri, The Art Spirit, Philadelphia, 1951, p. 186Little Girl in Red was painted in Woodstock, New York, during October, 1921. An artist colony and base for the Art Students League during the summers. Woodstock became Henri's home between June and October of that year. Here he painted nearly one hundred works, including this portrait of one of his favorite models, Agnes Sleicher, depicted with an air of sympathy that exemplifies his attitude towards children: "If you paint children you must have no patronizing attitude towards them. Whoever approaches a child without humility... wonderment, and without infinite respect, misses in his judgment of what is before him, and loses an opportunity for a marvelous response..." (R. Henri, p. 186)This painting is listed in the artist's record Book L, no. 178 as Agnes in Red.
