Robert Smithson (American, 1938-1973)
Smithson began as an artist living in New York and studying at the Brooklyn Museum School during the 1950s. He met and married sculptor Nancy Holt before becoming a key figure in the development of Land Art. While he is most well-known for his man-made geographical formations including the Spiral Jetty (1970) located on the Great Salt Lake, he continued to work in various media including photography until his death in a plane crash in 1973. He dubbed his massive alterations, both inspired by nature and reactive to it- earthworks.
