Description: 3 October 1899 Preference Shares of £10. red. No 312. Formed 1899 to take over the business of a company of the same name, formed 1886, which itself took over a company of the same name. They were engineers and shipbuilders, on the Tyne, in northeast England. We assume the original company was founded by the Robert Stephenson (1803-59), son of George Stephenson, father of the steam-locomotive. Robert was an engineer, who, apart from running the family engineering firm, acted as an adviser to railway-builders in many countries, helped De Lesseps to plan the Suez Canal, and built many bridges.
