Lot 23: ROBIN HOOD SHELL CRATE CIRCA 1912 BLACK GUN POWDER SHELLS PAINTED RED/GREEN RARE
TERRA INCOGNITA Fall Western Cowboy, Native American, Sporting, Advertising, Decoy, Gun, Knife, & Photography Auction
November 1, 2016
Chicago, IL, USALive Auction
Description: Very few of these exist! This is the exact shell crate pictured in Boggess book on Sporting collectibles on page 227. Mr. Boggess either left out or didnêt have access to the Robin Hood powder Co history. However due to the way this crate is stamped, and in relation to when the business changed name, it likely was from circa 1912, possibly before. This research was based on Internet information here so buyer beware and do your own research. Buyer has the ultimate decision as to age. Either way painted red and green (similar to their individual shotgun shell box color) shell crates are extremely rare. This is one of the earliest Robin Hood crates extant. It is 12 gauge, no 3 shot, 1 1/8 oz., 3 _ drs.
