Description: pioneering Irish ornithologist .- Head ( Capt . H. Nugent) & Capt . J Scott Cockburn, editors . The Hoghunters' Annual , 12 vol., plates (some colour), illustrations , vol.II loosely inserted two A.L.s from Robin Ruttledge, both on 'Queen Victoria's Own Poona Horse' stationery , subscription form loosely inserted in several vol., original wrappers or cloth-backed wrappers, a little faint foxing and/or soiling, a few vol. with a little loss at spine ends, vol. VIII faded, 8vo , 1928-39. Rare complete. Contains both compendiums of reports on and reminiscences of the pigsticking competitions held in the British Raj; also with notes, respectively, on the history of the pastime, on its celebrated participants, and on best hunting techniques; in addition, a few poems and essays. The last volume was edited by Cockburn and Lieut.-Col. H.J. Manockjee Cursetjee. Robin Ruttledge (1899-2002), Lieutenant, and later Major, in the Poona Horse; awarded the Military Cross in 1919; upon his return home from service, Ruttledge resumed the systematic ornithology he had pursued as a teenager; he was later instrumental both in establishing reserves and sanctuaries and in popularising conservation. The letters, to Ruttledge's mother, refer, inter alia , to his own participation in pigsticking competitions; he credits contributions to the annual by various of his friends and associates. In one he states that he is the author of the tag-line used on the title of volume II: 'Greater Sport has no man than this, that he hunteth the Hog with his friends'.
