The Swiss watch manufacturer Rolex SA is headquartered in Geneva and runs a large manufactory in Biel/Bienne. Hans Wilsdorf founded the company in 1905 in London. He began the business by importing Swiss watches to London and branding them ‘Rolex’, on the dial. He registered the brand in 1908 and focused on wristwatches, which were considered unreliable at the time. Rolex released the ‘Oyster’ in 1926, which was the first waterproof watch and marks the beginning of the brand’s rise to fame. (erg)
