Description: 2nd-3rd century AD. A gold earring with wire loop attached to a disc shape with chevron pattern to the border and set with a garnet; below three dangles with two gold beads each and a garnet bead at the end. 3.45 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Property of a Mayfair gentleman; acquired by the family during the 1970s. The stone was examined in detail by Dr. Bonewitz who observed: 'The large garnet may be pyrope, a less-common garnet, characterised by the richness of its deep red colour.'
