Description: 3rd century AD. A large bronze shield boss comprising a domed centre and slightly angled flange with four large rivet-heads; remains of iron cross-bar grip to the reverse with fixing studs. Cf. James, S. Excavations at Dura Europos 1928-1937. VII The Arms, Armour and Other Military Equipment, London, 2004, item 590. 364 grams, 19.5cm (7 3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s.
