Description: 1st-2nd century AD. A bronze medical instrument, possibly an artery hook, comprising a ribbed square-section shank with median block, D-shaped pierced finial, hooked blade. Cf. Milne, J.S. Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times, Oxford, 1907, plate L(2"). 18 grams, 87mm (3 1/2"). Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired London art market, 1960s-1980s.
