Description: 1st-2nd century AD. A red jasper intaglio of a Mercury bust and caduceus, in a later gold D-section hoop with plaited wire to the outer face, discoid bezel with inset. 4.76 grams, 21.63mm overall, 19.94 x 14.37mm internal diameter (approximate size British N, USA 6 3/4, Europe 13.85, Japan 4) (3/4"). Property of a European collector; acquired Europe, 1980s-1990s. The stone was examined in detail by Dr. Bonewitz who observed: 'Very nice jasper, bold carving.'
