Description: 2nd century AD. A terracotta oil lamp with broad face, short nozzle, pierced lug handle; band of stamped horseshoes to the shoulder, facing mask with goat-ears, horns and thick beard (probably Faunus or Pan); marked to the underside with an incised name 'AVRE[...]' (Aureus?"). 92 grams, 11.5cm (4 1/2"). From the private collection of a German gentleman; acquired prior to 1999.
