Description: Oil on panel
Italy – Roman school, 17. century
Dimensions of depiction: 53,5 x 43 cm
Maße der Holztafel: 60 x 49,5/50,5 cm
In gilt wooden frame: 70,2 x 61 cm
Depiction of the Evangelist writing, with an eagle, his usual attribute, in front of a mountain scenery

Traditionally the evangelist John is identified with the ‘beloved-disciple’ John, who is named also in the gospel of Mark. This identification of course formed the manner of portraits of the evangelist John. Like the other evangelists, he is portrayed as a writer. His personal attribute is the eagle emblematise the high aspiration of the theology expressed in The gospel of John. Otherwise the juvenile and charming depiction of John is an attribute of the ‘beloved-disciple’.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. Inspection under UV-light reveals several scattered retouching and repainting. On the right there is a stripe of 8 cm width with extensive repainting. At the back of the evangelist the surface mutated: a dense craquelé is visible. The panel shows some boreholes at the edges and also two short, starting cracks at the upper and lower edge. The edges and corners of the panel have sustained knocks and scuffs. The priming verso shows some loss of paint, a writing in Spanish language survived only as fragment. The frame shows only few usual signs of age and wear, the corners are slightly open.
