Description: An ornate Roman silver inlaid bronze handle from a large serving vessel, c. 3rd – 4th Century AD, designed with three vertical ridges running the length. The central ridge is inlaid with silver and serves as the stem of a blossom above the attachment plate, itself beautifully adorned with two sphinxes with female heads sitting vis a vis. They are both is extremely fine style and highlighted with inlaid silver in their wings, eyes and decorative elements on their chests, their feet resting on volutes, each with central inlaid silver pellet. L: 7 ½ in (19.1 cm). Well-preserved and a product of a master workshop with a lovely brown patination with green highlight. Ex Los Angeles private collection.
