Hellyer 402; Ex-Libris 241; Compton (1978), p.125; The Russian Avant-Garde Book 45, 46

NOTE

The Union of Youth group was formed early in 1910 under the patronage of L. Zheverezheyev and was comprised in the main of the Hylaea poets and the artists Rozanova and Filonov. The group curated exhibitions and explored recent trends in Western, Oriental and African Art. In 1912 they began publishing a magazine and this present copy is issue number 3 in which there are essays on current artistic movements, pieces that were influential in the Avant-Garde movement, including an important article by Rozanova, "The Foundations of the New Art", and a synopsis by Matyushin of Du Cubisme by Gleizes and Metzinger, Nikolai Burliuk on his brother Vladimir, and an attack by Khlebnikov on Kant.

In the second part, for the first time there is a section devoted entirely to the Hylaean Group, with poems by the Burliuk brothers, Guro, Kruchenykh's "Tyanut konei [Horses are Pulled]", Khlebnikov's famous "Voina smert [The War, Death]" and Livshits. The Hylaean group was founded by the Burliuk brothers and Benedikt Livshits towards the end of 1911 and it is their work that marks the beginning of Russian Futurism and its extreme radicalism. Rozanova's bold, striking Futurist images, her first published work, complement the linguistic works. The conclusion, signed by Matyushin, contains a reference to the newly published Sadok Sudei II [A Trap for Judges II] (see lot 5).
