Description: **S.S. CALIFORNIAN LETTER DEFENDING CAPTAIN: So much has been written and debated regarding the role of the Californian and her Captain, Stanley Lord, in connection with Titanic's rescue; yet so little original vintage material weighing in on the debate has been made available to collectors. This lot consists of an incredible content typed letter signed by Stanley T. Lord, son of Captain Lord, dated 12th December 1970 addressed to Mr. Donald P. Kaye of Connecticut. In it, Captain Lord's son dispels the myth that his father's career was over in the aftermath of the British Inquiry, explaining how he was given command of one of the Nitrate Producers vessels. He states that his father's conscience remained clear as it was never in his power to be of assistance. He takes issue with the innuendo by Rufus Isaacs [British Attorney General] that his father was drunk in his cabin. He states, in part, …father was a teetotal (sic)…as his ship was static all night how on earth could the moving light seen be from the Californian… This letter is a must read for anyone seeking to learn more about Captain Lord's feelings on the issue of his actions that night, as the younger Lord goes into much detail concerning his father's thoughts.
