"WALTERS 1872" l.l, vessel identified on pennant, artist and ship identified oin plaque. Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x41 1/4 in., in gilt frame. Condition: Lined, retouched. N.B. The Lucy S. Wills was built in Medford, Massachusetts, in 1870. The ship is pictured on its northward journey up the Irish Sea past the Skerries, a group of dangerous low lying islets, on its way to Liverpool. The Skerries lie two miles off the Anglesey coast, North Wales. Since the 18th century the lighthouse pictured in the left background played an important role in safeguarding ships in this heavily traveled waterway. The blue and white starred flag flown from the fore-mast represents a call for a pilot boat from Liverpool.
