Description: Estimate: $7500 - 9500 This rare Winchester Model 1886 rifle was manufactured in 1906 and has a rare combination of special order features and is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter describes it as a rifle .33 caliber, 20 inch round barrel, plain trigger, plain pistol grip, plain checkered stock, Lyman combination front and Lyman rear sights, 1/2 magazine and rifle butt. The letter states that the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 1, 1906 with one other arm to order number 74,254. The top of the barrel is stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885." ahead of the rear sight, the left side is marked "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" at the rear and the caliber marking "33 W.C.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel at the breech. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman folding combination front sight with ivory bead and a sporting style rear sight on the barrel and a folding Lyman combination tang peep sight on the receiver tang. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver at the breech. The Winchester 1884 and 1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger along with the serial number "139728". The lower receiver tang is stamped with the assembly number "272OFC" and the stock and buttplate are stamped with matching "272" assembly marks. Blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The select walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have Style I checkering with a single checkered diamond under the forearm and a single checkered panel on either side of the pistol grip. The pistol grip has a hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". Winchester Model 1886 rifles with short barrels and other special order features are very rare. BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut checkered Gauge: 33 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 139728 Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the blue finish on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap and 50% of the blue finish on the receiver. The finish wear on the receiver is concentrated on contact points on the bottom and lower edges. The case colors on the lever, hammer and buttplate have faded to a silver-gray patina with traces of casehardened finish. Two tang screws are replacements. The stock and forearm both remain very fine. The checkered panels have light-moderate handling wear and there are several minor handling marks on the stock. This is a rare, fully documented, special order Winchester Model 1886 rifle in very fine condition.

Buyer Premium: All bid prices "hammer prices" (means the price at which a lot is knocked down to the purchaser) will be subject to a buyer's premium payable by the purchaser of 17.5% of the bid price. There is a 2.5% discount for payment with cash, approved check or wire transfer. The premium is added to your successful bid and the two together equal the total purchase price.
At the announcement of "SOLD", the highest bidder will have purchased the offered lot. This purchase is subject to all the terms and conditions set forth herein. The purchaser assumes full responsibility thereof and if requested will sign a confirmation of the purchase. The purchaser further agrees to pay the purchase price, buyer's premium and any applicable taxes before any lot may be transferred. All items purchased by successful bidders must be paid for in full the day of sale. All items purchased by absentee bidders must be paid for in full immediately upon notification.
Taxes: Some items are exempt from Illinois sales tax and others may be subject to Illinois sales tax or local sales tax. The tax is computed on the total purchase price. To establish a tax free sale, a copy of a valid resellers permit or other instrument of information must be provided to our satisfaction establishing a sales tax exemption. Any purchaser claiming an exemption yet unable to provide proof will be required to pay the tax to us and seek a refund from the State of Illinois. Generally, all items shipped out of state are tax free sales. We have been authorized by the consignor to retain as part of our remuneration, the premium payable by the purchaser.
