Liber Chronicarum [Nuremberg Chronicle], 1st ed., Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 12 July 1493, 321 leaves (of 326, lacking folios 107, 299, 300 and two blanks), sixty-four lines and headline, table and parts of text double-column, Gothic type, 1799 woodcut illusts. (of 1809), including double-page world map, twenty-nine double-page town views and eight full-page cuts, lacking the double-page map of Europe (folios 299v and 300r), also nine small woodcuts of figures on folio 107, scattered touches of old colour, title with old ink notes, somewhat soiled and creased, marginal strengthening to verso, upper right corner repair to folio 76, inner margin repair to folio 105, folio 117 bound before 112, folio 229 numbered 231, 259 (blank) detached, 143 with tear and repair to lower margin and old manuscript, 168 split and with paper repairs to lower margin, 183 with hole in centre of leaf affecting six lines and shield on verso but a complete duplication leaf loosely inserted, 189/190 torn and repaired with loss, 209 torn with repairs and manuscript notes at foot, 232 with some loss to lower corner, 234 repaired with loss, 257 trimmed at foot affecting small woodcut view, 296 with some loss to lower corner, 297/298 detached and with marginal repairs, some other spotting and occ. browning and small faults, the whole volume closely trimmed and sometimes affecting running heads, 19th-century quarter roan, covers and spine detached, folio (400 x 270 mm) First edition of the most highly illustrated book of the 15th century. The woodblocks were cut by Michael Wolgemut, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their workshop, including the young Albrecht Durer, KobergerÕs godson.
