This painting is a classic example of Gile's period of brilliant color, influenced by the French Fauvist painters. Gile's work was greatly admired by Galka Scheyer who became a champion of his art, encouraging the artist to exhibit his work in New York. Scheyer introduced the works of Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Four) which consisted of Kandinsky, Feininger, Jawlensky and Klee, to the United States in 1924. She housed a collection of The Blue Four's work in the Oakland Museum and it is known that the members of the Society of Six had access to these paintings, almost surely influencing the group.
