Description: A RARE VITA ICON SHOWING THE MARTYR ST. FILOTHEA OF CURTEA DE AGNES Romanian, dated 1818 Oil on wood panel. Saint Filofteia is one of the child-saints of the church. She lived in the 13th century, South of the Danube, on the territory of the Wallacho-Bulgarian Tzarat, not far from the present Veliko-Tarnovo. Filofteia grew in a family of peasants. Her mother, who taught her the Christian faith, died when Saint Filofteia was young and she was brought up by her father and her step-mother. Saint Filofteia was very generous and she used to share her food and clothes with the poor. One day, while taking food to her father who was working in the field she shared that food with a beggar and she took a smaller serving to her father. This was very angry and he hit her with an axe, killing her. The body of the saint became wonderworking at once. Since the 14th century the relics can be venerated in the beautiful church of the Monastery of Curtea de Arges founded by Neagoe Basarab, another Romanian Saint. Saint Filofteia was 12 years old when she was marthyred and she is celebrated on the 7th of December. Her name is translated as The One Who Loves God. Dated in signed lower right '1818: Teodor [...]'. Minimal certical crack on the lower border. 35.5 x 28.5 cm.
