Where The Wild Things Are. [New York]: Harper & Row, 1963

Condition Note:

first edition, presentation copy inscribed by the author ("For George | Maurice Sendak") on half-title, oblong 8vo, colour illustrations by the author, original green cloth backed pictorial boards, first issue dust-jacket, minor wear to upper joint of dust-jacket

CATALOGUE NOTE

a fine copy. Copies in the first state dust-jacket with no mention of Sendak's winning of the Caldecott Medal are uncommon, for once the medal was awarded, copies were recalled to be reissued with a new jacket commemorating the award. The upper flap includes the price of $3.50 in the top right corner and the correct publisher's information is present: a three paragraph blurb followed by "HARPER & ROW, PUBLISHERS | 40-80 | 1163". The lower flap carries a further three paragraph blurb.

Maurice Sendak drew from his own lonely experiences to produce this dark evocation of childhood. Controversial at the time of publication the book quickly became one of the most important and best loved of post-War children's books and a cornerstone for any collection of children's books. this is a wonderful association copy linking one of the greatest late-twentieth-century children's authors and a charismatic film director. Spike Jonze is currently working on the production of the film version of Where the Wild Things Are which is due for completion late in 2005.
