November 19, 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Painting with ink and colors. Japan, 18th cent.
Under a tall rock on the shore of a brook sits the popular recluse and immortal, with his companion animal and hallmark, the toad gama. The sennin has his feet in the water and holds a peach in one hand as long-life symbol. Wittily depicted is his slightly annoyed expression, as the gama apparently does not give him any peace, possibly scratching him on the back of his neck. According to one legend, this sennin once supposedly took in a sick toad, which was actually a clever demon with magical practices, by which sennin was able to profit. The Magical-Demonic is clearly visible in this painting of the toad. Powerful strokes of the ink brush, confident draping of the robe´s pleats. Elegant, harmonious brocade mounting, ivory rollers, good condition. With wooden casket *.
