Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
The night of September 7, 1970, an additional performance was added to the final show of Elvis' wildly successful Summer Festival. It was an early a.m. performance for which the Colonel had negotiated a tidy sum. After this third record-setting show of the day, the International Hotel presented Elvis with a large, gold boxing-style belt that read, "World's Championship / Attendance Record / Las Vegas Nevada / International Hotel." Not to discount the priceless contributions of the Colonel in this astounding record-breaking festival, the International Hotel also awarded a grand loving cup trophy to the Colonel. It is engraved, "TO COLONEL TOM PARKER IN RECOGNITION OF A SUPREME PROMOTIONAL EFFORT, UNEQUALED EVEN IN LUSTROUS LAS VEGAS. YOUR 1970 ELVIS SUMMER FESTIVAL WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. WITH APPRECIATION AND AFFECTION. Alex Shoofey and staff INTERNATIONAL HOTEL SEPTEMBER 7, 1970." The plaque on the loving cup's base reads: "ELVIS SUMMER FESTIVAL." This dynamic summer festival, which commanded $125,000 per week for Elvis from August 10th to September 7th, was the basis for the 1970s documentary Elvis: That's The Way It Is. The offered silvered metal loving cup trophy stands 16 1/2 inches (41.91 cm) tall and is 12 inches (30.48 cm) wide at the handles. The large, substantial cup weighs almost 15 pounds (6.8 kg) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The trophy shows just a few signs of wear, mostly around the black base in the way of a few small scuffs. The top portion of the trophy itself shows only very faint toning, perhaps from oxidation. Near Mint condition.
