Description: Bronze. India, about 18th Century

A heavy cast ceremonial shield presenting a well-worked depiction of the Virabhadra – a fierce form of the high-god Vishnu. He is standing upright and carrying the Karanda Mukuta. The attributes are (starting on the upper left) the trident, drum, bow, shield and arrow. The empty hand is raised in a gesture offering protection. Several large and small figures are also shown, most of them in adoration. Left of Virabhadra is the goat-headed Daksha, and a devi on the right. Next to the crown of the deity is a sun- and moon symbol, a zoomorphic mask on the top border, Shiva’s bull nandi on the right and even further right is Shiva with his consort Uma. On the outer left is presumably Candeshvara, a saint adoring Shiva but also a peaceful Shiva form with his attributes. The rectangular shield as arched sides adorned with pearled seams. A strong structure on the back with a grip, nice deep-brown patina, overall very good both in terms of artistic quality and quality of hand-work.
SIZE 29,5 x 21 CM
From a German collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi – Vienna

A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
