The Motorcyclists of the Seventies was commissioned by the late Joseph Erdelac, accomplished Cleveland businessman and avid art collector with a life-long commitment to the local art scene. The series come to auction directly from his collection. It was Mr. Erdelac who conceived of the series and who, after conducting an international search, selected Ms. Campbell as the right artist to execute it. The commission took her on an almost decade-long odyssey- from Cleveland to New England, Los Angeles, Texas, Florida, Finland, Sweden, Holland, England. More than observing, Ms. Campbell connected with the subjects and their distinctive cultures. More than descriptive or purely narrative, the series, in total and painting by painting, expresses the drama of the events along with the mindsets and even the souls of the riders.
