Lot 7001: Signed Numbered Watermarked SALVADOR DALI Original Color Woodcut Dante Divine Comedy Suite Paradise Canto 9 Venus Framed Surrealist Art
November 27, 2016
Freeville, NY, USALive Auction
Details: This original Salvador Dali color woodcut on watermarked BFK Rives paper comes from the famous Divine Comedy suite and illustrates Paradise Canto 9 (Third Heaven: Sphere of Venus) wherein Dante criticizes the clergy for their focus on money rather than on Scripture and the writings of the Church Fathers.
Commissioned by the Italian government to celebrate Dante's 700th birthday, Dali's Divine Comedy suite comprises 100 color wood engravings created between 1960 and 1964. The suite contains incredible imagery ranging from the grotesque to the sublime as the artist follows Dante from the deepest circles of Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and into heavenly Paradise.
This original print is inscribed "14/150" and "Dali" in blue pencil in the lower margin. While the suite was issued unsigned, Dali agreed to sign a subset of prints using three colored pencils: red for hell, purple for purgatory, and blue for heaven. Dali signed these prints at the FAR Gallery and the St. Regis Hotel in New York City and photographs exist of these signing sessions. Naturally, given Dali's extreme popularity, some inauthentic signatures were also added to authentic prints from the regular edition and for this reason we cannot conclusively guarantee this signature as being Dali's, although the color, style, and placement is consistent.
The print is attractively framed to approx. 12"x15". A 1960s gallery label is on verso.
