Description: Artifact #: 0796. Shipwreck: Atocha 1622. Recovered in 1985. Dimensions: 21cm H x 26cm W x 35.5cm

Provenance: This extravagant two-piece silver box was the 17th-century version of a portable heater. Having a personal source of heat was a luxury for the wealthy in the 1600s, and so braziers such as this were filled with warm coals to heat up a ship's cabin, or even be placed under the many layer's of a woman's dress while she was seated. This piece remains unconserved and should be handled with care.
