CATALOGUE NOTE

Lucy Bridges was the daughter and co-heir of George Brydges, 6th Baron Chandos of Sudeley and his wife Jane, daughter of John Savage, Earl Rivers. Her father was a gallant Royalist, who fought at the first battle of Newbury in 1643, where he had three horses shot under him. She married Adam Loftus, son of Sir Arthur Loftus of Rathfarnham, Dublin, and his wife Dorothy, daughter of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork. He was M.P. for Lismore between 1661 and 1666, and in October 1674 was given the title of Ranger of Phoenix Park, Dublin, and of all the King's Parks, Forests, Chaces [sic] and Woods in Ireland. He became Privy Councillor in 1685, and in 1686 was created Viscount Lisburne. He was killed at the siege of Limerick in 1691. Their daughter Lucy married Thomas, 1st Marquess of Wharton in 1692.
