Description: Southern School, late 19th/early 20th c., "Portrait of Carey Hansford Blanchard (1805-1861), oil on canvas, unsigned, 36 in. x 29 in., period frame. Ill.: Bruns, Mrs. Thomas Nelson Carter, ed. Louisiana Portraits. New Orleans: National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Louisiana, 1975, p. 35. Note: Carey Hansford Blanchard was born in Norfolk City, Virginia in 1805. His family moved several times during his youth, finally settling in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, where they owned Roselawn Plantation. In 1927, Carey Blanchard, his brother, Alfred, and his future father-in-law, Robert Alexander Crain, were involved in the infamous Sandbar Fight, a duel on a sandbar in Vidalia, Louisiana, which evolved into a brawl that killed two men and seriously wounded two others. Surviving that incident, Blanchard eventually married Frances Amelia Crain and had many children, including Newton Crain Blanchard, who became a member of the House of Representatives, a Senator, and the 33rd governor of Louisiana.
