Description: Bronze. Indonesien, Majapahit, 13rd to 14th century

A very rare, early bronze from Java of exceptional quality. Although almost the whole appearance here seems to be that of the Hindu god Shiva - especially due to the karanda crown - this little Buddha depiction clearly shows a bodhisattva. The entire execution is both characterful and distinctive in its excellent artistic workmanship. In the raised hands are a frond camara (left) and mala (prayer beads). Furthermore, the fingers of both hands form the gesture for demon protection. The main hands carry lotus and offer the teaching gesture, the vitarka mudra. The bodhisattva wears jewelry, Indian dhoti and stands on a round lotus base. Very strong black-brown age patina with red-brown and some greenish areas. Overall good condition.

From a German collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi – Vienna

A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
