Lot 277: Statendam. 1928
October 30, 2016
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: Artist: A. M. CASSANDRE (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968) Size: 31 5/8 x 40 3/4 in./80.3 x 103.5 cm Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam "In the 1924 Salon des Indépendants a painting titled Boatdeck by the American artist Gerald Murphy was exhibited. Although this gigantic thirteen-foot painting is lost, the black-and-white photograph that still exists is sufficient evidence that Cassandre saw the painting and borrowed heavily from it in designing [this] poster for the Statendam. The obvious similarities are seen in a decision to use only the small but very dramatic top deck of a passenger ship, angled smokestacks, funnels, and halyards. Where Cassandre departs from Murphy is in the simplification and distortion of the rendering....Cassandre's poster, with its experiment in playing with scale, is certainly more unorthodox (Brown & Reinhold, 14). (ship, great art deco)
