Description: (SUMATRA - MANUSCRIPT MAP.) MacDonald, John. A Survey of the West Coast of Sumatra from Padang Head to Batang Capay Bay. By Captain John MacDonald by order of the Government of Bencoolen. Fine early copy of an unrecorded manuscript survey by MacDonald. Graphite and ink on onion skin paper, modern canvas backing with silk selvage. 18 1/2x24 1/2 inches. [Np, circa 1820]

Notes: Assigned to Fort Marlborough in Bencoolen (Bengkulu) as a British naval officer and engineer, MacDonald expertly surveyed much of the western coast of the island of Sumatra in the late 18th and early 19th centuries for the British East India Company.
