Description: [Swift, Jonathan] Lemuel Gulliver. TRAVELS INTO SEVERAL REMOTE NATIONS OF THE WORLD. London: for Benjamin Motte, 1726. 2 vol. 8vo (7.5" x 4.5"). Frontis portrait in second state, xii, 148, [6], 164; [6], 154, [8], 199 pp., + 4 engraved maps and 2 plans. N signatures in second volume supplied from another copy (as noted by an old dealer's slip) though the paper matches nearly perfectly and any transition is hardly perceptible. Bound in period paneled calf with title labels in gilt. Some staining to boards, one small chip to front board of second volume, corners showing and some light loss at spine ends, three hinges lightly cracked, the whole well intact. Former owner's bookplate to pastedowns, first and last several leaves with staining to inner margins (gutter), else the contents are generally quite clean and bright. A Very Good set. ************************************** First edition, second issue (Terrink's "AA") of one of the great classics in literature. Provenance: George Clark's copy with his monogram in ink to titles and gilt monogram to spines. Clark was a scholar, friend of Pope, and Tory politician. [Teerink 290; Rothschild 2107]
