TADEUSZ GRONOWSKI (1894-1990)
Challenge Gordon Bennett.
Weill calls Gronowski 'the first professional Polish artist.' He quotes the architect Niemojewski who wrote in 1927 that the "modern poster in Poland is the work of Tadeusz Gronowski; one need back up only ten years and remember the chaos of graphic art at the time to appreciate the value of the pioneering role Gronowski played in the area of the Polish poster.' The artist 'made several trips to France where he was influenced by post-Cubism (asymmetrical compositions, geometric deformations) and by Cassandre, who led him to the airbrush' (p. 265). Shades of Cassandre can clearly be seen in this poster for the twenty-second Gordon Bennett Challenge, whose September 23rd starting point was Warsaw's Pole Mokotowski Airport. The winners of that year's sporting balloon competition were Poland's Captain Franciszek Hynek and Lieutenant Wladyslaw Pomaski who took first prize for the second time, landing at Anna Woronez in the Soviet Union after traveling 1,333 kilometers.
