Lot 551: 'THE CAVALIER' BY JULES DESGOFFE (FRENCH, B 1864)
November 5, 2016
Online, PA, USALive Auction
'The Cavalier' By Jules Desgoffe (French, B 1864):
An oil on board of a cavalier in dress uniform carrying a spear, in an interior setting. It is signed by Jules Desgoffe, son of French still-life painter Blaise-Alexandre Desgoffe, and a student of Rober-Fleury and Bougrereau. Desgoffe exhibited his paintings in the Paris Salon beginning in 1886, beginning with studies of French artillery.
The Cavalier is a favorite subject of Desgoffe’s, and exemplifies his interest in military garb and presentation. Desgoffe’s fluid strokes well convey fine detail especially in the rich cloth and drapery of the cavalier’s uniform, which is painstakingly depicted. In this Cavalier, Desgoffe has concentrated the majority of his attention on the figure himself, treating the interior setting with a broader, more gestural approach than those of his other Cavaliers.
The surface displays some light abrasion that does not detract from the adept brushwork and striking composition. The matting and framing appear to be original given the wear pattern on the surface of the board. The velvet matting has suffered somewhat from age, as has the exuberant gilded baroque frame, which nevertheless remains a stunning display piece.
