Description: The London 1908 Olympic Games Silver medal for Heavy-weight Boxing awarded to Sydney Charles H 'Sid' Evans (1881-1927), London 1908 participant's medallion and related items:, the silver medal with athletes after the classical to obverse and St George and Dragon to verso, inscribed 'Second prize heavy weight boxing,(33mm diameter) also a participation medal for the London 1908 games after B Mackennal. obverse with chariot and winged figure of Victory to reverse, with later suspension loop (50mm diameter) and a London 1908 Olympic Games competitor's card for S C H Evans, together with a 9ct gold medallion with enamelled decoration and necklet 'Polytechnic Harriers S.C.H Evans Stadium 26.05.08', and a visiting card for S.C.H Evans. Note Sydney Charles H 'Sid' Evans was born in Aldermaston and was a British Heavy weight boxer at the turn of the century. his calling card lists the following Ex-Amateur Heavy weight Boxing Champion of England, Olympic Finalist, Late Army Gym, Staff and Boxing Instructor to Aldershot Command, Referee, British Boxing Board of Control, Promoter. The 1908 Olympics were originally intended to have been held in Rome, but were moved to London at short notice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. The Stadium built at Shepherds Bush contained not only the running track but also the cycling track, outdoor swimming pool and platforms for wrestling and gymnastics.
