DESCRIPTION: A copy of the superbly rare and important Der Martyr Spiegel printed at the Ephrata Cloister in 1766 for the Mennonite community. This book was physically the largest volume printed in colonial America and rates as a tour de force in printing history. It contains the names of those who died for their faith during the Reformation. It was printed at the Cloister at the request of the Mennonite community and ranks as one of the key books in the history of the Anabaptist faith. This example is unusual in that it has a very rare printed paper liner that may be unique. This paper is perhaps one of the earliest products of the Ephrata press as it relates to the Fraktur tradition. Copies of this work are found in most major museums including Winterthur, the State Library, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, etc. Ex. I Daniel Rupp collection. MEASUREMENTS: 14" x 5" x 10". CONDITION: Worn but original binding that is dry and crusty.
