"The Type Writer" Commonly known as the Sholes & Glidden. Large model with wooden body as presented by James Densmore to E. Remington & Sons of Ilion, NY/USA to demonstrate the new invention. Probably made by Mathias Schwalbach at Kleinsteuber's workshop in Milwaukee. All major features already in existence, like upstroke mechanism, 4-row keyboard etc. Built as a demonstration model with limited functions; the machine can produce one vertical line at best, as the platen is fixed in place, making line spacing impossible. - Literature: please see German caption. - Inoperative and incomplete. - A milestone in typewriter history!
"The Type Writer" Ursprüngliche Bezeichnung der Sholes & Glidden. Großes Modell mit Holzgehäuse, wie es von James Densmore der E. Remington & Sons, in Ilion, NY, zur Vorstellung der neuen Erfindung übergeben wurde. Alle wesentlichen Merkmale wie Unteranschlag, 4-reihige Tastatur etc. sind bereits vorhanden. Vermutlich von Mathias Schwalbach in Kleinsteubers Werkstatt in Milwaukee hergestellt. Es handelt sich um ein reines Demonstrationsmodell, das bestenfalls nur 1 Zeile vertikal schreiben konnte, da die Papierwalze starr befestigt war und so kein Zeilenabstand möglich war! - Literatur: P.
